{"id":218,"date":"2010-09-18T12:10:33","date_gmt":"2010-09-18T11:10:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.p2vpro.com\/?p=218"},"modified":"2010-09-18T12:12:12","modified_gmt":"2010-09-18T11:12:12","slug":"losug-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.p2vpro.com\/?p=218","title":{"rendered":"LOSUG September"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I attended the Oracle LOSUG meeting on September 15th to hear a talk from Phil Kirk on Zones and Crossbow.<\/p>\n<p>I also took the opportunity to meet Alasdair Lumsden (who has set up openindiana).<\/p>\n<p>I scribbled down a few notes to help jog my memory.<\/p>\n<p>HISTORY<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Zones were never meant to be like VMs. They were designed as a process container.<\/li>\n<li>Zones have a shared I\/P stack and routing.<\/li>\n<li>There is (typically) a separate I\/P alias per zone.<\/li>\n<li>IPMP works.<\/li>\n<li>Config is done from the global zone.<\/li>\n<li>IPfilter works (v4).<\/li>\n<li>DHCP, IPsec, raw sockets don&#8217;t work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some problems with zones:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Non-global routing is affected by global routing table. (Some examples).<\/li>\n<li>Using a null route is often used to add a gateway entry but this is where global routing table changes can break zones.<\/li>\n<li>Default routes are selected round-robin.<\/li>\n<li>defrouter option in the zone config just does a route add (nothing clever in the kernel).<\/li>\n<li>inter-zone traffic can be forced to go over the wire. Normally it would go via loopback for efficiency but some sites require audit\/logging of traffic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NOW<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each zone gets its own I\/P stack.<\/li>\n<li>Config is done in the zone.<\/li>\n<li>Lots of zones need lots of NICs.<\/li>\n<li>Can mix shared and exclusive stacks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CROSSBOW:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Virtualisation at the data (mac addr) level. vNICs.<\/li>\n<li>vNIC gives b\/w resource management (dladm).<\/li>\n<li>vlans are supported in Crossbow.<\/li>\n<p>P.S.
